The original gay pride flags flew at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade celebration on June 25, 1978. In 1974, Baker met Harvey Milk, an influential gay leader, who later challenged Baker to devise a symbol of pride for the gay community. After an honorable discharge, Baker taught himself to sew. Gilbert Baker, born in 1951 and raised in Parsons, Kansas, had served in the US Army between 19. Six-color version popular since 1979, with royal blue replacing both turquoise and indigo. In addition to the rainbow, many other flags and symbols are used to communicate specific identities within the LGBT community.

LGBT individuals and allies currently use rainbow flags and many rainbow-themed items and color schemes as an outward symbol of their identity or support. The flag is typically flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow. Baker's first rainbow flag had eight colors, though the most common variant consists of six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Originally devised by artist Gilbert Baker, the design has undergone several revisions since its debut in 1978, first to remove colors then restore them based on availability of fabrics. Using a rainbow flag as a symbol of gay pride began in San Francisco, but eventually became common at LGBT rights events worldwide. Also known as the gay pride flag or LGBT pride flag, the colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. blech. The rainbow flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender ( LGBT) and queer pride and LGBT social movements. I guess that might be part of the reason but :/ And adding the trans flag on top of all that? Just. It looks like something a child with access to just a small box of markers would make. adding black and brown stripes to it? With no regard to if it will mesh with the other, already poorly coordinated colors? Eugh. Like, the pride flag on it's own is bad, but just. Again, unrelated to it's meaning I understand the importance of acknowledging how race can affect the queer experience and appreciate the desire to represent black people. The version with the brown and black stripes is even worse. Now, I understand that part of the reason for that is probably stuff like the cost of fabric, since, y'know, it's a flag and materials cost money.

I'm grateful to what it stands for, and I do love homophobes crying about 'gays stealing the rainbow' or being triggered by it, but. some of the brightest and most obnoxious shades just thrown together. I often find myself envying other flags that are nicer, like the trans flag and the pan flag. Just a basic grasp of color coordination. No social commentary here, no internalized homophobia. (On that note, I think the queer chevron flag is underwhelming.) I'm not some "not like other gays who can't shut up about being gay like ugh why can't they just act in a way that makes it easy for straight people to forget they're gay, haha am I right straight besties?" pick me type that's trying to throw my queer siblings under the bus to look 'respectable'. This is completely unrelated to who the flag is for.
